Complaining!

Today in graphics we were checking out some mag layouts for our next project, and my professor asked us what we think of this one:

picture-11
(don’t know where it’s from, found it via my graphics blog)

I was sitting in the front row, and I timidly said “I’m tired…..of seeing women’s mouths covered in ads,” you know, referring to the metaphorical silencing of women, and how it lends it self to certain violence and ideas about how women want to be treated. And my professor seemed taken aback for a fraction of a second, and then replied, innocently, with “well, you know, maybe she likes it, maybe she’s into that kind of thing.”

OK. That bothers me. Because…well, that ad makes it really easy to have that response. Talk about a cycle of oppression, or something.

Scalping sexism…?

Last night i went to the city, in the hopes of scalping some tickets to see Syracuse men’s bball team tackle the Pirates from Seton Hall.

Now, I obviously don’t consider myself any less of a sports fan for being a girl. I consider myself a critical sports fan, due to being a conscious person (ok, and a feminist). But I love Syracuse basketball. And I wasn’t expected to be shut down by scalpers on account of being female.

OK, I look young, and I wasn’t completely decked out in SU apparel, nor was I wearing anything that would lead anyone to believe I have money. But I had $40 in my wallet and I wanted to see some basketball! One guy was walking by me, saying “selling tickets, selling tickets…” When I asked him “you’re selling?” he looked back at me, and gave me a dismissive hand wave, as if to say “I don’t want your business.”

I don’t know why this happened, I don’t know if it would’ve gone any differently if I had a penis, ok. And I concede that I didn’t have a ton of money and wasn’t planning in spending a lot, alright. But it sure raises some questions, doesn’t it? Like the lack of female scalpers (the scalpers aren’t sports fans, so that doesn’t explain it. They’re more like businessmen – maybe that does). I dno. That one exchange really got to me – probably because I don’t think I get treated differently for being a lady all that often. And I kept thinking about it – all the way to the ESPNzone to watch the game on tv.

tag says: “No Need to be Ugly to Save the Planet.” It’s for a makeup company, assumedly an eco-friendly one.

I can’t be the only one who is irritated by these things, right? I mean, if I’m saving the planet, I don’t give a shit about my fucking eyebrows. I’m trying to do important things, and I shouldn’t be shamed for it. Jeez.

You need flowers fast! Because otherwise, your woman is gonna smash up all your shit! Flowers will surely take care of this problem, because, you know, that’s what woman care about. They’re not worried about all those other problems in your relationship – flowers are really all she needs. Because she’s petty and materialistic! SRSLI THO

(ps, I’m still not sure I understand AdGoodness. I know it says “the best and sometimes the worst from around the globe” but there’s never any mention of which it is! These have really aesthetically pleasing art direction, I guess, but they’re just so fucked up! I don’t know if AdGoodness is taking into account content, or just imagery. Can anyone shed any light?)
